What Are Dental Veneers?
Procedure Overview
Getting dental veneers requires at least two visits to the dentist. During the first appointment, the dentist removes a small amount of enamel from the front of your tooth, usually less than one millimeter. This may not require local anesthesia depending on how much enamel needs to be removed. The dentist uses a rotating dental bur to gently shave the tooth’s surface to ensure proper bonding.
Next, the dentist takes an impression of your teeth to send to a lab, where your custom veneer will be made to fit your smile. A small retraction cord may be used to temporarily move the gums away from the tooth to expose more of its surface. You’ll then bite into a mold to create the impression.
While waiting for your permanent veneer to be made, you may receive a temporary veneer, depending on the amount of enamel removed. Once your veneer is ready, the dentist will ensure it fits comfortably, making any necessary adjustments.
At the second appointment, your veneer is permanently bonded to your tooth using special bonding cement, which is hardened with a blue light. The dentist will check the fit to make sure the veneer looks and feels just right. If you have any concerns, feel free to discuss them with your dentist to ensure you're happy with the final result.
